Diabetes. It's Not Going Away!

" A sign of intelligent life is changing your behavior after receiving new information."
                                                                                                                   Dr. Daniel Amen

It appears that instead of getting diabetes under control, it is growing just the other way. According to one report I read recently, 21 million people had diabetes in 2010.  Another report from 2012 claimed 25.8 million.  Let me share a few facts worth knowing.
  1. San Antonio alone has a population of 14% with diabetes which is double the national average.
  2. One in three children born in 2000 will be directly affected by diabetes in 2050.
  3. 29 million people have diabetes in the US currently.
  4. 86 million people have pre-diabetes and 9 out of 10 are unaware.  Scary because only 1 of 10  can fix it before it is a full blown problem.
  5. The International Diabetes Federation reports that 522 million people worldwide will have diabetes by 2030.
Since so many people are pre-diabetic, it might be a good idea to get tested if you are under 45 and overweight with more risk factors such a family history of diabetes.  Keep in mind with a diagnosis of pre-diabetes it is possible to reverse the problem.  It requites getting active and eating a healthy diet and not too much. You don't have to become a gym rat and get down to skinny.  A reasonable amount of exercise can make a difference and losing 10 pounds can make a big difference.  For more information, check out the American Diabetes website.
