Happiness

What helps someone be happy depends on the person.  Sonja Lyubomirsky says " However, when we research strategies, the two that are often at the top of the list are physical activity and acts of kindness". Martin Seligman, PhD, recognized as the father of positive psychology, recommends doing one unplanned, unexpected act of kindness tomorrow.  Be sensitive to how that one act changes your mood.

Elaine O'Brien, MAPP, offers other strategies for developing happiness.
  • Express gratitude. She says it is one of the most powerful interventions. The author of the "The Secret", Rhonda Byrne, says that she begins her day saying thank you thank you as her feet touch the floor in the morning.
  • Focus on your strengths. Use them everyday!
  • Create meaning. Create meaning through charitable projects.  Every city, even small ones like Boerne, has a food bank in need of voluteers and donations.
  • Take the time to acknowledge accomplishments. When someone congratulates instead of   brushing it off, let it soak in and say "thank you".
