SeDS

If you  have been reading my blog very long, you know how I feel about exercise.  It is as necessary as brushing your teeth.  Certainly this isn't anything new as I have read several great quotes about health and fitness from fifth century Hipprocrates.   The most recent one being "All parts of the body, if used in moderation and exercised in labors to which each is accustomed, become thereby healthy and well developed and age slowly; but if they are unused and left idle, they become liable to disease, defective in growth and age quickly".  Studies are showing that 92% of adolescents and 98% of adults are not meeting the minimum guidelines for physical activity.  Today after lunch there were 3 of us in my gym. Do you know what SeDS is?  Sedentary death syndrome!  It refers to  a chronic disease that can be life-threatening caused by an inactive lifestyle.  It is estimated that SeDS will contribute to 2.5 million premature deaths in the US and cost close to two trillion dollars in health care over the next decade.  No typos! A lot can be done to prevent and treat cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancers and many other illnesses with 30 minutes of exercise a day!
