You may have heard the news on Monday regarding the statement from the World Health Organization concerning processed meat and red meat. For some it hurts. For some like me, a vegetarian, it doesn't hit home so much. In case you missed the report, the WHO through studies has determined that processed meats such as ham and sausage can cause some cancers. The study refers mostly to meats that are salted, cured, and smoked. Haven't we known for quite some time that processed foods come with their own array of problems or did that come to me in a dream? However, the WHO claims that eating 50 grams of processed meats daily can increase your cancer risk by 18%. Fifty grams is about 2 slices of ham. The WHO also issued a statement about eating red meat possibly being carcinogenic. The meat industry was not so happy. I still think the best way to eat is clean, eating whole foods in moderation as close to the way God intended them as possible. You may be the grandma who lived to 101 and ate a hot dog everyday or not. At the very least, leave the bacon off the burger!
